24st Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)
“Who do people say that I am?” (Mk 8:27), the question that Jesus asks the disciples in today’s gospel, is one that has been repeated throughout the ages. The answer then was “John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the prophets” (8:27). Today, some regard Jesus as just a great teacher. But if that’s all Jesus is, he has no claim on our hearts, no reason to ask us to follow him, to take up the cross, to lose our life for his sake.
No, the One who gave his life for us, suffering rejection and death is more than just a teacher. When, next, he asks the disciples “Who do you say that I am?”, Peter responds for all of them, “You are the Christ” (8:29). Let that also be our response. In the darkest hours, may our faith in Jesus as Messiah and Lord sustain us.
God bless you!
