Dear St. Hugh Community,
This month we are focusing on the virtue of enthusiasm. As part of the practice of our faith, enthusiasm is being filled with the Holy Spirit and eager to proclaim the Good News and to do God's work in the world. The Bible tells us: "...And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness." (Acts 4:31)

LOOK WHAT"S NEW AT St.Hugh in Our Spanish Program!
We have purchased a new Spanish program for the non-native Spanish language speakers. This program is called TPRS "Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling". The TPRS system is a method of second-language teaching that uses highly-interactive stories to provide comprehensible input and create immersion in the classroom.
TRRS focuses on fluency by teaching stories. Fluency comes by:
- students focusing on the details of a story
- students not focusing on the language
- students picking up the language unconsciously
This system uses a storytelling platform to provide these basic skills:
- teach to the students not the curriculum/practice for mastery instead of covering a curriculum through story retells: students frequently retell and engage in the stories
Mr. Rolando Carmenates is certified to teach this program. We have adopted it as a pilot program for the remainder of this school year.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Mr. Carmenates at your convenience.
We know that the additions of these programs will enhance the educational experiences of our students!
iRead provides unparalleled support with powerful data, reporting, and instructional resources to maximize instructional time and accelerate achievement. This program includes more rigor, more language, and more connected text than other digital programs on the market. The iRead program will be used daily by the kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers for all students. The Reading Raiders program and Mrs. Mendiola's reading class will also use this program to remediate, identify areas of need, and enhance reading. The program focuses on phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, spelling and encoding, fluency, vocabulary, and language development.
In order to fully implement this program, we also had to purchase ten new iPads.
